I agree with Sopromat, this is one of the worst remasters I've heard. The backing track has somehow been cranked way up so that the vocals are drowned beneath the other instruments. It actually gets very tiring for the ears after a while. The original CD may have some issues, as a lot of CDs mastered in the '80s do, since CD mastering was still in its infancy back then... But it still sounds way better than this new master.
Please don't separate the original record as a product to mastering and to not-the mastering state! One may never know why the original sounds that way as it does because you end up listening a record which went through obscure technics from recording to the mastering. Even if the earlier mastering tech. is supposed to be rudimentary, that was it's advantage. They couldn't destroy the sound quality, there was no digital noise supression, so the originality of a sound remained. That's the no1. reason why they were better then. Then comes the so many ingredients which has nothing to do to the "mastering" but has serious impact to the resulting sound. Remastering has became an over-hyped and badly trated method. They have to sell the same material again so they push it through EQs and compressors and the bloody listener gets a debatable result and "engineers" keep on experimenting with the boundaries of the human, where it all becoming unbearable? All in all the originals are always better. The only exception is if the track are re-recorded from the tapes.
I actually find this is a good remaster, its not as loud as the original CD and sounds more warmer, especially the synth on track 2. Compared to the original CD, id say this is pretty much better than the first pressing. Same goes for Rhapsodies by Irene Papas and Vangelis.
This is the worst remaster of Vangelis I ever heard. In fact, this is even not a remaster in my understanding of this word - they just applied a couple of poor audio filters, that's all. And the sound became worser, lost it's original clarity, Irene's voice "drowned" in the music...Same thing I can tell about another "remastered" album - "Rapsodies".
