Ray abandoned the cowboy suits and brought in strings to accompany him, making him one of the first to explore the smooth, orchestrated sounds of late-'60s and early-'70s country-pop. The Ray Price Beat Goes On. When Williams died in 1953, Price began using Williams band, the Drifting Cowboys, before forming his own group, the Cherokee Cowboys.
